"We've been wanting to pair up with Roadrunner for a while now," sagt Tremonti. "We've always thought it would be the perfect home for us, especially with all the other acts on the Roadrunner roster, so we really wanted to make it happen. We're real excited to get the record out. We lock ourselves into a room 24 hours a day when we're doing a record, and we put everything we had into AB III. It's been a whirlwind!"
Wenn man auf die turbulente Karriere der Band zurückblickt, kann man Tremonti nur zustimmen. Nachdem sich die Beziehung zu Creed Sänger Scott Stapp im Jahre 2004 abgekühlt hatte (mittlerweile hat man sich wieder zusammengetan), gründeten Tremonti, Philipps und Marschall mit dem ehemaligen Mayfield Four Frontmann Myles Kennedy (ebenfalls Frontmann von Slashs Tourband) die Band Alter Bridge und nahmen das erste Album „One Day Remains" auf. Das Album erlang in den USA bald Goldstatus.
Der Aufstieg der Band war rasant und Ausnahmegitarrist Tremonti war fortan immer öfter auf den Covern der einschlägigen Gitarrenmagazine zu bewundern. Das zweite Album „Blackbird" folgte 2006 mit der Single „Watch Over You", die damals als Titelmelodie der VH-1 Serie Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew diente. Es folgte eine weltweite Tour, um die Botschaft von Alter Bridge möglichst vielen Fans zu verkünden.
Aber was genau ist diese Botschaft? Auf den ersten beiden Alben ging es um neue Anfänge und um den Kampf positiv zu bleiben angesichts des Elends in der Welt. Jedoch ist das auf Album Nummer drei wohl etwas anders. Denn trotz ihrer starken musikalischen Verbundenheit, unterscheiden sich die Meinungen der Bandmitglieder in vielen Dingen sehr, so Tremonti. „We all believe different things. In fact, the overall theme of this record is Myles' struggle with faith. He has trouble believing in anything spiritual, and he really puts that out there. Personally, I don't believe in organized religion: I think it's crazy to believe that people are going to burn in hell if they don't go to the same church that you do".
Einer der vielen Höhepunkte von „AB III" ist der Song „Words Darker Than Their Wings", in dem Kennedy das Dilemma, die materielle und spirituelle Welt miteinander in Einklang zu bringen, versucht zu verarbeiten.
"Myles once said that he didn't believe in anything," recalls Tremonti. „I said, ‘You've got to believe in something: even Albert Einstein came to believe that this universe was constructed too cleverly to be happenstance'. This turned into „Words Darker Than Their Wings", and both Myles and I ended up singing two different vocal lines on it... that alone makes the song much different from anything we have ever done."
"AB III" ist ein Album voller Kontraste. Erneut produziert von Michael „Elvis" Baskette bietet es eine breite Palette an Songs. „We went into the process of putting the record together with a lot of confidence," sagt Tremonti, „but we didn't go into it looking to be commercial, or to have radio singles. We just wanted this to be an album that pleased us artistically, through and through."
"We are always writing," fährt er fort. „I have ideas that make it onto albums six years after I first wrote them! Most of AB III was written in the last two or three years, but there are some parts that have been around for much longer than that. The very first song, Slip To The Void, has one of my favorite vocal performances ever by Myles - the song is really creepy and lets the listener know the vibe of the record. It's pretty dark. The intro really sucks you in..."
Doch die Dunkelheit, die Tremonti beschreibt, ist selbstverständlich nicht die einzige Emotion, die die Band auf „AB III" musikalisch umsetzt - es gibt auch jede Menge Aggression. Die erste Single „Isolation" zum Beispiel. Tremonti: „That's a more upbeat tune, with some real metal in there - in fact it has a speed metal bridge. It has a melodic chorus, though: melody is still the most important thing for us. There's no point in being heavy just for the sake of being heavy."
Produzent Baskette, den Tremonti als "fünftes Bandmitglied" beschreibt, brachte die Jungs dazu, eine enorme Bandbreite an Emotionen auf dem Album unterzubringen. Vom philosophisch angehauchtem „Wonderful Life" in dem es um einen Mann geht, dessen Frau an einer Krankheit stirbt, mit der Message, dass man jeden Tag so leben soll, als wäre es der letzte. Bis hin zu Songs wie „Coeur D'Alene", der von einem sicheren Hafen handelt - einem Zuhause weit weg von Zuhause.
Und es gibt auch klassische dunkle Metal Momente. „My favorite song on the record - and the darkest - is Show Me A Sign", erklärt Tremonti und fügt schmunzelnd hinzu: „I was into Celtic Frost and Venom when I was growing up: this isn't a metal song, but it certainly contains a brooding darkness that is palpable!"
Und was kommt dabei heraus, wenn man all diese Aspekte zusammennimmt? Ein dynamisches Album, das den Hörer auf eine komplexe und geradezu erschütternde musikalische Reise mitnimmt, die er so schnell nicht vergisst. Wer dachte, er kenne Alter Bridge mit den ersten beiden Alben in- und auswendig, den wird „AB III" überraschen.
